The obverse of the Great Seal of The United States is our national symbol, designed by Philadelphia artist Pierre Eugene du Simitiere and adopted in 1782. The Great Seal is the national coat of arms of the United States.

The Great seal itself depicts the American Eagle with a shield, clutching an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left talon, signifying peace through military prowess. Thirteen stars adorn the sky above the eagle which features sun rays breaking through the clouds. A ribbon in the eagle’s beak holds a ribbon with our nation’s motto: E pluribus unum, meaning “out of many, one,” that was contributed by Ben Franklin. Encircling the Great Seal is a commemorative list of the major wars fought by the defenders of our great nation.
