Kit Carson, born December 24, 1809, in Madison County, Kentucky, was an American frontiersman, trapper, soldier, and Indian agent who first scouted much of the unknown American west. Carson’s deep knowledge of the peoples and territories of what would become California made him an indispensable guide to John C. Fremont and General Kearny. His expiditions, bravery and loyalty made him into an epic hero of dime store books across the nation.
